This hat was knitted in my studio on a vintage domestic knitting machine using a beautiful merino-quality wool sourced from a mill in southwest Donegal, an area which can trace its heritage to the early tradition of hand spinning, dating back centuries.
Irish tweed yarns were originally hand spun, woven and knitted in local homes. The Donegal woollen mill in Kilcar is one of the last remaining companies producing this indigenous and authentic yarn.
The Donegal wool is spun there in the traditional woollen spun method using skills handed down through generations and is richly textured and beautifully tactile and cosy. It is renowned for its distinctive and beautiful flecks of colour that are reminiscent of the local landscape and has all the ingredients of the traditional homespun Donegal tweed yarn.
The merino wool used to produce the yarn cannot be sourced in Ireland and comes from Australia, from farms where the practice of mulesing is not carried out.
